General Tips

• Always have paperwork including identification, boarding pass and passport if necessary when arriving at airport security checkpoints.

• Wear easy to remove shoes and be prepared to remove both your shoes and outer garments such as bulky coats and sweatshirts.
• Pack in layers when packing both your carry on as well as your checked baggage as layers are easier to scan and will lessen the chance that your luggage will need to be searched.
• Remove your laptop from its case when you arrive at security unless you are using a TSA approved checkpoint friendly laptop bag.
• Arrive early to the airport and check in once you arrive. You never know when problems may arise with your luggage or your flights so you are advised to arrive at least one hour early and even more during the holidays as lines may be long.
• Remember to follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry on. Each passenger is allowed one one quart zip top bag with only 3 oz or less containers of all liquids and gels. Once you arrive at the checkpoint, be ready to take it out of your carry on and place it separately on the belt for further scanning as well.
• Carry all prescriptions in their original packaging.
• Avoid wearing as much jewelry as possible as it may set off alarms when checking in.
• Dress and act the part. Remember that security is there for your safety and the safety of others. A trip through security is not a time for joking around. The fewer problems you cause, the fewer problems you may expect.

Under way right now are the beginning test phases of the new program called TSA Pre. A voluntary pre screening initiative, those qualifying to participate in this program will be eligible for expedited screening. What this means for the approved traveler is that each traveler will be referred to a lane where they will undergo expedited screening which may include no longer having to remove:

• 3-1-1 compliant bag from carry-on
• Laptop from bag
• Light outerwear/jacket
• Belt

Right now, the TSA Pre program is only being used by a limited number of participants including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs and only at the following airports:

Terminal 2 – Opened in 1962, it was home to Northeast, Braniff and Northwest. Now home to Delta Air Lines and has 7 jetway equipped gates.

Terminal 3 – Was originally built as the worldport for Pan Am in 1960. Today, Delta is using the terminal however, demolition is forthcoming as Delta expands its services from Terminal 2 to Terminal 4 and expanding.

Terminal 4 – International Terminal, terminal 4 is the other terminal able to handle the superjets. It was the first terminal in the U.S. to be managed by a foreign operator and opened in 2001. It includes 17 gates and is being expanded by Delta to include 9 more international gates in addition.

Terminal 5 – Once known as TWA terminal is home to JetBlue and was constructed in 1962. It includes many gourmet restaurants and shops and 26 gates.
