History Of JFK

The worlds leading international gateway, over 90 airlines operate out of JFK International Airport. JFK was originally slated to be a small, less than 1,000 acre airport in April of 1942, but as often happens, plans changed when the airport formally known as Idlewild quickly grew to five times that size.

By 1963, this “small” airport in the borough of Queens, was rededicated as John F. Kennedy International Airport and quickly earned its place in history. Handling over 46 million passengers alone in 2010, JFK International today welcomes more international traffic than any other airport in North America.

JFK Facts

JFK International is operated today by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. An agreement reached in 2004 ensures the continued operation of JFK as well as LaGuardia through 2050.

The location of JFK is in the southeastern section of Queens County New York City, more specifically on Jamaica Bay. JFK is just 15 miles by road from midtown Manhattan.

JFK is almost 5000 acres in size which includes 880 acres in just the Central Terminal area alone.
